The job of an academic is to pursue the truth. Part of my role as an independent academic is community service, and a large part of this service consists of contributing to public discourses through the media. 

 

I strongly believe that academic research output is a public good because it is the citizens of Ireland that fund the salaries of workers in third-level education. This perspective is becoming increasingly important as the mainstream media have largely ceased to play the role of the 'fourth estate' as an independent check and balance on the powerful sectors in society, including government and business. 

 

That task now falls to NGOs, independent journalists, and those academics who are willing to speak truth to power.  However, it is increasingly difficult to make expert, objective, and evidence-based interventions into the public discourse because of the gate-keeping role of the mainstream media. I find that even "live" contributions on the radio or television are 'mediated' by broadcasters and panel chairpersons who are uncomfortable with hearing evidence that goes against what is considered the accepted 'spin' on particular political topics.  My strong commitment to social justice underpins my efforts to resist encroachments onto academic freedom, and my determination to say what needs to be said, without fear or favour.

 

I make my research-based media contributions from the perspective of the common good of citizens, with a particular emphasis on the inclusion of marginalised or silenced groups - those whose voices and needs are rarely heard over the airwaves,  or read in print.
